VoIP Bandwidth Calculator

Use our VoIP bandwidth calculator to see how much bandwidth you will need to run multiple simultaneous calls over your broadband internet connection. When you consider running more than one call at the same time there must be enough bandwidth for your calls.

  Inputs

1. Select Codec Type1

    or input bandwidth2

2. Sample period

3. Silence suppression3

  Technical results

Packets per second

Payload size
octets

IP/UDP/RTP bandwidth4
kbps

Ethernet bandwidth5
kbps

Max simultaneous calls on a Ethernet6

Max simultaneous calls on a Fast Ethernet6

Max simultaneous calls on a Gigbit Ethernet6

In plain English, this means you could have

to

concurrent calls over 128kbps - 256kbps of symmetric bandwidth

to

concurrent calls over 384kbps - 512kbps of symmetric bandwidth

to

concurrent calls over 640kbps - 768kbps of symmetric bandwidth

to

concurrent calls over 896kbps - 1024kbps of symmetric bandwidth

Using the selected codec and sample period, each concurrent call will consume roughly:

Kilobytes of bandwidth per minute

Megabytes of bandwidth per hour

Notes

  1. Selecting Codec type will automatically select a recommended sample size
  2. Enter a bandwidth manually if the codec is not listed
  3. Reduces the bandwidth to 50% of what it would be without silence suppression. Note:- savings will vary depending on implementation and type of use
  4. IP/UDP/RTP headers added to payload assumes a fixed 40 octet overhead
  5. Adds a further 38 octets for the Ethernet preamble (8), header (14), CRC (4) and Inter-frame gap (12)
  6. Assumes 100% link utilization on FDX point-to-point link
